How does the Period Calculator work?
Your menstrual cycle is governed by a complex balance of hormones that repeats roughly every month. By knowing the First Day of your Last Period (LMP) and your Average Cycle Length, we can mathematically project the different phases of your cycle into the future.
Understanding the 4 Cycle Phases
- Menstrual Phase (Bleeding): Day 1 of your cycle. This is when the uterine lining sheds due to a drop in estrogen and progesterone. It typically lasts 3 to 7 days.
- Follicular Phase (Safe Window): This phase overlaps with your period and ends when you ovulate. Estrogen rises, energy levels typically peak, and your body prepares to release an egg.
- Ovulation / Fertile Window: The brief 6-day window where the egg is released and conception is possible. This usually occurs 14 days before your next period starts.
- Luteal Phase & PMS: The final 14 days of your cycle. Progesterone spikes, which can cause PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms like bloating, fatigue, mood swings, and cravings in the 7 days leading up to your next period.
Why track your PMS Window?
PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) affects over 90% of menstruating women. By predicting the 7-day window before your period starts, you can proactively manage your schedule, prioritize rest, and adjust your diet or exercise routines to accommodate natural dips in energy and mood.
Disclaimer: Menstrual cycles can vary naturally due to stress, weight changes, illness, and travel. This calculator provides mathematical estimations based on averages and should not be used as a medical diagnostic tool or reliable contraception.
