How does the U.S. Navy Method work?
The U.S. Navy Body Fat formula is widely considered the most accurate method to estimate body fat without expensive clinical equipment (like DEXA scans or water displacement). It uses standard tape measurements around specific body parts to calculate a highly accurate estimation of your body composition.
How to measure correctly:
- Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape flat.
- Waist: Measure horizontally around the navel (belly button) for men, and at the narrowest point for women.
- Hips (Women Only): Measure at the widest circumference of the hips/buttocks.
Why is Lean Body Mass important?
Unlike a standard BMI calculator that only looks at total weight, evaluating your Lean Body Mass (your weight minus fat) helps you understand if you are actually gaining muscle or just losing water/fat. It is the most critical metric for athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
